Spade 160S Hot Dipped Galvanised Anchor – 35kg
Hot dipped galvanised and exceptional holding power – the Spade 160S hot dipped galvanised anchor should be a serious consideration if you are looking for a good night sleep at any anchorage.
When it comes to anchor designs, only a few can be considered part of the “hall of fame,” and the Spade may well sit at the very top of the list—if it hasn’t already earned that status. Designed in the late 1990s by Alain Poiraud, the Spade anchor pioneered the generation of modern anchors and influenced the design principles behind many of the most popular models used today.
So, what made the Spade different, and how did it change anchor design? The key lay in its philosophy, which was rooted in the surface area theory of anchoring. This theory emphasizes that an anchor’s holding power is determined less by its overall weight and more by its shape, weight distribution, and surface area. Central to this was the fluke—the part of the anchor most responsible for holding power once it engages the seabed.
By understanding fluid dynamics and the load-holding coefficients of different shapes, it was identified that a concave profile was the most efficient for maximizing holding power. The Spade’s Patented fluke was therefore designed with a concave curve and a large surface area, acting like a powerful brake against the seabed once set.
To ensure this fluke consistently positioned itself for maximum effect, the Spade’s design concentrated 50% of its total weight into its sharp tip. This weighting meant that, when the anchor hit the seabed, the tip would naturally dig in, forcing the fluke to rotate into an optimal position, more perpendicular to the seabed. In this way, the Spade combined surface area, concave geometry, and intelligent weight distribution to deliver a breakthrough which reshaped modern anchor design.
Features of Spade 160S Hot Dipped Galvanised Anchor – 35kg
– Concave Fluke Shape – Proven to provide the greatest load holding coefficient, ensuring great holding power.
– Large Surface Area Fluke – Acts as a powerful brake against the sea bed
– Optimized Weight Distribution – 50% of the weight concentrated in the tip, helping for the fast setting and positioning of the anchor.
– Great Performance – Exceptional holding power in a range of substrates/seabed and anchoring conditions.
– Low Center of Gravity – Ensures the anchor lands and stays the correct orientation on seabed.
– Hot Dipped Galvanised – Provides good corrosion resistance without breaking the bank.
– Two Piece design – Anchor can be easily disassembled and assembled for compact storage when not in use.
– Available in large range of sizes from 5.5kg upto 170kg.
