Since Lone Star released their GX series of winches, they’ve become an incredibly popular choice among boaties in New Zealand. We’ve certainly found them to be a product that practically sells itself. Boat builders love them and so do everyday boaties.
From our experience with the GX winches they follow character of the Lone Star brand, which is a product that isn’t popular because of flashy branding or marketing campaigns, but because it is a great product. They’re top-quality, durable, and reliable; all essential traits any boatie should look for in their anchoring system. While the GX series are a little more pricey, we firmly believe it’s worth the investment in the long run compared to more affordable alternatives. It’s a product we truly stand behind.
It’s easy to say that a product is good and great and that you should buy it, but what makes these winches objectively good?
To start with, all Lone Star GX winches are designed and manufactured in Australia using high-quality, Australian-made 316 stainless steel and anodized 6061 T-6 aluminium. Complementing the use of quality raw materials are the parts such as genuine Italian gearboxes, triple-sealed bearings, twin shaft bearings, and an emergency release system on all models. Furthermore, the motors are specifically designed and custom-built for these winches, with the demands of the marine environment fully considered in their design. As a result, they meet standards such as IP68. In fact, Lone Star was the first company to successfully manufacture an anchor winch motor that met the IP68 standard. The end result is a winch that is built to get wet and handle the perils of the marine environment.
The Lone star GX4 Anchoring Drum Winch is designed for boats up to 12m in length. It features a 1500W(12v) or 2000W(24v) purpose built permanent magnet motor, with a polished 8mm 316 Stainless Steel construction, a solid machined 316SS Spool shaft. Drop/Retrieval rate of 55m per minute with a 2000kg max pull on empty drum, 5200kg static Holding Power at anchor. Manual release feature in the event of a power loss. 110kg max recommended working load.
Included in the box: the winch, a 8mm base mounting plate, all required switching gear including the solenoid, a genuine MP marine-grade circuit breaker (made in the USA), a toggle switch, and mounting hardware. Also included are the warranty information, switch panel template, and installation instructions.
